About Us

Matthew Simmons, D.D.S. completed his undergraduate studies in biology at Boston College. Following graduation, he returned to his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland and received his doctorate in dentistry at the University of Maryland Dental School. After completing a general practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he served a one year internship in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Satisfying his special interest in the field of anesthesiology, he was accepted into and completed a one year fellowship in anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then completed a four year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Simmons practices a full range of oral and maxillofacial procedures with special interests in the fields of dental implants, corrective jaw surgery, and pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has staff privileges at Saint Vincent Health Center and Hamot Medical Center. Dr. Simmons is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has resided in Erie since August 2001. His wife Michele recently gave birth to their first child, a son named Ryan.

 

John L. Alonge, M.S., D.D.S is a native of the Erie region. Upon graduation from North East High School (1973), he attended Allegheny College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in English (1977). Dr. Alonge was accepted into the Graduate School of the University of Maryland. While working towards his master's degree he was accepted to the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland at Baltimore - the world's first dental school. While in dental school he was elected class president each of his four years and concurrently completed his Master of Science degree in Anatomy.

Dr. Alonge graduated Magna cum Laude from dental school (1983) and received numerous awards and honors. Among them, election to Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society for graduating in the top five percent of the entire University of Maryland system; Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society; the Heatwole Chair to the senior who has best exemplified the qualities of ethical standards, kindness and humanitarianism; the Kelsey Award for Professional Demeanor.

Dr. Alonge was selected for the United States Air Force General Practice Residency Program which he completed in 1984. He was then transferred to Hickam AFB, Hawaii where he served as Chief of Outpatient Oral Surgery prior to entering formal Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas (1990). Dr. Alonge was then assigned to Wright-Patterson USAF Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio where he served as Oral Surgery Training Officer for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program. He separated from the Air Force in 1994 to enter private practice in Erie. Dr. Alonge is board certified in his specialty and is the first in this region to successfully recertify with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

As a result of his years of teaching, Dr. Alonge has extensive experience in all subspecialty areas such as dental implants, dentoalveolar surgery and corrective jaw and facial surgery. Dr. Alonge is especially talented in management of anxious patients and is the first oral surgeon in the region to be certified by the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology.

Dr. Alonge is on the medical staff at Saint Vincent Health Center, Hamot Medical Center, and Meadville Medical Center. He also performs outpatient surgery at Saint Vincent Surgery Center, Hamot Surgery Center, and the Village Surgicenter of Erie. Dr. Alonge has been certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support and serves his peers as a Basic Life Support Instructor.

Dr. Alonge is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and its component societies, and a member of the American Dental Association and its component societies. He resides in Erie with his wife, Karen and their children Greg and Michelle.
